Beth Stelling Grand Rapids Concert reviews
Somewhat extraordinary, somewhat disappointing
Beth Stelling is, without a doubt, one of the greatest living musicians and songwriters. Even the show of a lifetime promised to be a great treat, getting an opportunity to see her outdoors, no less in the fabulous Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.
Beth's ability to play blues and jazz is unlike any other artist and made the concert worthwhile. She spent most of the remaining show on newer music from her 2008 cd, which, sadly, most of the crowd didn't know. Perhaps the famous stage fright affecting her music, Beth started out, as many musicians do, a little rusty.
Beth and her band are amazingly gifted musicians, and simply transcendent to listen to. However, they don't seem to have the connection most bands do, and several times wandered aimlessly at the end of a song. Her half-hearted 'Brown Eyed Girl' was a well-received nod to the great music of her past.
The biggest disappointments were not enough classic Beth songs and no encore?!? Plus the extortionist prices. She doesn't seem to like playing live, such a shame. She could have really engaged the audience and missed the mark. Yes, I would recommend seeing Beth if you have a chance. Just be prepared that it won't be what you hope for.
